Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore individual, interpersonal, and environmental correlates associated with excessive leisure-time sedentary behavior among older Korean adults residing in urban and rural area.
Methods: Using data from 2017 National Older Koreans involving 10,052 (urban=6,912, rural=3,140) participants,we performed multivariate logistic regression analysis to calculate the odds ratios of excessive leisure-time sedentary behavior (¡Ã5 hours per day) for each individual, interpersonal, and environmental factors, stratified by residential area.
Results: Excessive leisure-time sedentary behavior was associated with several individual and interpersonal factors including number of comorbidity, exercise time, work time, and neighborhood relationship for the whole sample. Access to facilities was found to be a significant correlate only for the participants in rural area
Conclusion: The findings showed that excessive leisure-time sedentary behavior was associated with not only individual factors including socio-demographic, health status and behavioral characteristics but also interpersonal factors such as relationship with neighborhood. Furthermore, it should be noted that the environmental factor was also important to older adults residing in rural area. Intervention programs to reduce sedentary time of older adults may be more effective if they take these factors into account.
